Surface-enhanced 2D IR spectroscopy to study membrane-bound proteins

In the last decade, the plasmonic materials have begun to be applied to vibrational spectroscopies in order to enhance signal strengths. We harness these enhancements to be able to study the structures of membrane bound proteins in a single tethered lipid bilayer. My work focuses on how we can study the impacts of external stimuli, such as voltage, on potassium channels. Furthermore, we are interested in using isotope labelling and mutation schemes to further probe the mechanism of potassium selectivity and permeation in potassium channels.
